Always look for a good and qualified contractor to install your solar system. Just because you are having a new technology installed on your home, does not mean that you should look for new contractors. The type of work is very specialized and having a quality contractor with a proven track record is critical to having your system installed properly
Check that your solar-energy installer has the proper licenses and insurance. Installing solar panels on a steep roof is a delicate job, and you should feel confident that your installers know what they are doing. At a minimum, look for a contracting license, workers compensation insurance, and general liability insurance.
Never walk on solar panels. They are fragile and can cost you a lot of money if you break them. If you have to walk on them, don't walk on the ends since these are the most fragile areas.

Understand the limitations of solar water heating. The best systems are one third more economical when compared to energy efficient electric water heaters. Don't assume that early morning showers involve only cold water. The water in the tank should stay hot for at least 24 hours.
Do your best to reduce your energy consumption before investing in solar energy. Your solar energy system will be more affordable if you can live with a reasonable quantity of energy. Start by improving your insulation, make an effort to turn off appliances and replace old appliances with energy-efficient ones.
