Consider a solar powered attic fan if you are not ready to make the full switch to solar energy. This type of fan features sensors that can turn on the fan at a certain temperature. This will remove heat and lower the cost of cooling. A good solar powered attic fan will help cool your house and not cost anything to run.
If you’re planning to watch the solar eclipse, CNN’s Jennifer Gray explains how to protect yourself from damage caused by the sun.
If you will be ground mounting your solar panels, consider the wildlife in your area. Panels can be quickly destroyed by curious raccoons, hungry deer or hibernating squirrels. Try to place your panels in an area that is not easily accessible to such animals to optimize the lifespan of those panels.
Carefully consider the types of solar panels you plan on having installed. Long ago, if you didn't have enough roof space, you'd need very expensive high efficiency mono-crystalline panels. There are now more advanced polycrystalline panels and even thin film panels. If you've got enough roof space, you might wish to look at the size of the panels in relation to their output capacity to avoid having insufficient panels that you need more of later.
